IVAN MANAJLO

1961 – 1972

 

• Иван Манайло родився в Унґварї 16 януара 1942 рôка. Ёго ÿтиць – Федор Манайло, оден из фундаторÿв Пудкарпатськôї школы малярства.

Художньоє вошколованя дустав у училищови умілецько-промыслового кумшта у Унґварї (1956 – 1960), пôтôму (1960 – 1965) – у Кієвськôму Державнôму Умілецькому Інстітутї (ныні Кумштова Академія). У 1961 рôці Иван первый раз брав участку у выставі, на котруй презентовав «Натюрморт» (1961), а на весні 1962 мав перву персоналну выставу в Унґварї.

У 20-рÿчному віці вÿн ся уженив на дôньцї сященика Карла Купара – Ірмі. Дакотрый час (1962 - 1963) Ірма была из ним у Кієві. Жили ôни у режісера С. Параджанова – доброго приятеля ÿтця. У 1965 рôці уєдно из жôнôв рушив ся путовати по музеях и галереях Москвы, Ленінграда, Талліна, Вільнюса та Ригы.

У 1967 рôці уєдно из ÿтцьом брав участку у выставі творÿв украйинськых малярюв у Тбілісі (Грузія). Його роботы высоко оцінили, а успіх додав му увірености у свойых силах.

1966 – 1969 рр. преподає рисунок, мальбу, композіцію в Унґварському училищови умілецько-промыслового кумшта. И до ныні притямлювуть го студенты, як высокопрофесіоналного учителя. У сись період Иван, маючи муцну академічну оснôву у рисунку, глядать у рÿзных методах и модерных стилёх нові можності передачі свого позераня на світ. Уєдно из сим пише и у соц. реалістичнÿй манірі. До сьôго періода припадать и заимава, вшелияка за вылаженьом графіка. Фурт ся обертать и до портрета.

У 1972 році робив на творчÿй базі «Сенеж» пуд Москвôв, а написані там образы, того же рôка, пре удало презентовав на Цілосоюзнÿй выставі у Москві.

У 1969 - 1972 рр робив малярём Пудкарпатського Умілецького Фонда. Изреалізововав вітражі, фрескы, мозаїкы, барельєфы, різьбу по дереву, убряжовав каварнї, ставанкы автобусÿв і т.д. Есе давало порядный навецый заробок. У 1972 рôці Иван из Ірмôв уже годни были удпочити у Болгарії.

 

• Ivan Manajlo made his debut into the world on the 16th of January, 1942, in Uzhgorod. His parentage included Kovalcsik Mária, his mother, and his father, Fedor Manajlo, who was notably one of the pioneers of the Subcarpathian School of painting.

His artistic journey began with education at the School of Applied and Decorative Arts in Uzhgorod from 1956 to 1960, followed by a stint at the Kiev State Art Institute (now known as the Academy) from 1960 to 1965. His earliest venture into the public eye was a collective exhibition in 1961 that featured his work "Still life". By the autumn of 1962, Ivan had organized his inaugural solo exhibition in Uzhgorod.

At a youthful age of 20, he tied the knot with Irma, the daughter of priest Karl Kupar. The couple lived together in Kiev from 1962 to 1963, taking residence in the house of film director S. Paradzhanov, a close acquaintance of his father. In 1965, the couple embarked on a cultural expedition, visiting museums and galleries in Moscow, Leningrad, Tallinn, Vilnius, and Riga.

In 1967, Ivan, in conjunction with his father, participated in an exhibition showcasing the works of Ukrainian artists in Tbilisi, Georgia. The accolades his works received greatly boosted his self-confidence.

During 1966 to 1969, Ivan transitioned into teaching, instructing in drawing, painting, and composition at his alma mater, the School of Applied and Decorative Arts in Uzhgorod, which also served as a vocational school. His students held him in high regard as a highly professional teacher. It was during this period that he experimented with modern styles and explored diverse ways to express his worldview, leaning on his rich academic background. He also adapted his style to meet the political requirements of the period, employing socialist realism.

In 1972, Ivan took part in the artistic symposium "Senezh" near Moscow, where he prepared works that were later showcased to critical acclaim at the national exhibition in Moscow.

He served at the Subcarpathian Art Foundation between 1969 and 1972, where he prepared stained glass windows, murals, mosaics, reliefs, and wood carvings, and adorned coffee houses and bus stops, offering him a substantial additional income. In 1972, Ivan and Irma vacationed in Bulgaria for their summer retreat.

1973 – 1985

 

• Вуд 1972 до 1985 рôка Иван Манайло робить діректором училища умілецько-промыслового кумшта у Унґварї. На молодôго тридцятирÿчнôго маляря бізовали урядовати інштитуціёв, котру у 1945 році зафундовали Адалберт Ерделі, Йосип Бокшай и ÿтиць му – Федор Манайло. И бізовали небезосновно. Талантливі образы Ивана Манайла не раз ся експоновали на обласных и республіканськых выставах, ёго вызнаный учительськый талант, справницька активнÿсть, та й, видав, вступ у партію, – учинили го вылучно припаднôв кандідатурôв. Своє уряднитство сам Иван притямлять позітивно: “Товды появили ся реальні можності для розвоя модерного кумшта, уєдно из присокоченьом нашых пудкарпатськых традіцїй”. Вÿн не лем урядує, айбо и учителює. Учительська тай справницька робота не лишала вельо часу для живописа. Айбо Иван много малює, часто в училищі по занятьох. Тематика образув сього періода – фіґуралні композіціи, портреты, натюрморты, пейзажі, бештеловані творы.

По даякому перерыві, из зачатка 90-х рокÿв продôвжать робити в Умілецькôму Фонді.

1978 рÿк. Умер му няньо – Федор Манайло. Пуслїдні рокы житя вÿн тяжко хвôрів. Коли ся появила ідея створити музей ÿтця, Иван и сестра Катерина без сомнїваня пудпоровали иї и два рокы віновали орґанізаціи первого на Подкарпатті меморіалного музея. Як приказовав Иван, вÿн «изясь ся стрітив из творчостёв свого няня». Се дало інспірацію до намалёваня новых образув, до особного аналіза творчоського наслїдства ÿтця. Малює полотна, близкі до тематикы ÿтцьовых образув, и исповнять їх у своюй манірі.

 

• From 1972 to 1985, Ivan Manajlo held the prestigious position of Director at the School of Applied Arts in Uzhgorod. This significant responsibility was entrusted to the young artist at the age of 30, taking the helm of an institution that had been established in 1945 by the likes of Adalbert Erdelyi, Josif Boksay, and his own father, Fedor Manajlo. His appointment was well-deserved, as his exceptional talent had often been displayed at both regional and national exhibitions, his academic prowess and administrative skills were widely recognized, and his party membership positioned him as the most suitable candidate for the post. Ivan's reflections on his tenure as leader were positive, claiming that it brought forth real opportunities for the evolution of contemporary art while preserving the rich traditions of the Carpathians. His role wasn't restricted to administration, he also taught, leaving him with limited time for personal artistic creation. Despite this, Ivan frequently sketched, often after school hours, producing figure compositions, portraits, landscapes, and custom pieces. After a brief hiatus, he resumed his contributions to the Artists' Foundation in the early 90s.

In 1978, Ivan faced the loss of his father. In his final years, Fedor Manajlo had been plagued with illness. The idea of founding a museum in their father's memory was supported by Ivan and his sister Katerina. They spent two years curating the first Subcarpathian memorial museum, during which Ivan reconnected with his father's work. This renewed acquaintance sparked a wave of inspiration, leading him to produce new pieces that encapsulated his father's artistic heritage. Though he painted the same subjects as his father, Ivan's style was distinctly his own.

 

 

1986 – 1998

 

• Иван рішає пуйти из чиновства діректора училища из 1985 рôка. У 1986 рôці предкладує злаженя и стає у чоло «Творчоі Сполочности Професіоналных Малярÿв Пудкарпатя». Головує у сполочности десять рокÿв. Заряжує выстави членÿв сполочности на Пудкарпаті и за його гатарами (у Празі). Його роботы усе у выкладі сьих выстав.

У сисі рокы робить менаджером Межинароднôї асоціаціи “Інтерарт”. Зучасняться у рÿзных творчых пудмітках сиї установы. По многу ходит на пленеры. Ид сьому періодови припадать вельо натюрмортÿв, изображень живописных сеґлетÿв ёго керта, вадь пейзажі испôвнені на пленерах.                        

Из середины 90-х рокÿв вÿн обертать ся до новôї для нього темы – до жÿнського акта. Жоны нїжні, нагынчасті, притяжливі хôть маніра изображованя докус не реалістична. Ограниченôв колоровôв ґамôв, мінімалными художественными спіхами вÿн ся добиває шпічкового выслїдка. Такой и у сисі рокы взникать даякый кубістичный пейзаж из такôв самов ограниченôв колоровôв ґамôв. Малює и серію изображень култовôї архітектуры.

У 1996 – 1998 рокы вÿн є головов профсполка обласного Умілецького Фонда.

1997 рÿк. У маляря ся розвила сердцёва недостаточность. У Мадярщині му рôблят операцію на сердцёви – вставлявуть правену сердцёву клапку. Мусайность проходити непрестайну контролу у мадярськых кардіологÿв принукала Ивана тай Ірму приняти досудок про перевожованя до сосїднёі державы. Они поселявуть ся у селі Діош Йено. У сись час у Мадярщині жиє и їхньый сын - Андрій из родинôв. Андрій на тот час быв членом русинськôї сполочности Мадярщины (пузніше став головов). Они уєдно шорять многі выстави малярюв-пудкарпатцюв, на котрых презентувуть и свôї образы.

 

• In 1985, Ivan chose to step down from his position as the director of the school. However, his influence in the art world persisted as he established and spearheaded the "Association of the Professional Artists of Subcarpathia" in 1986, acting as its chairman for a decade. Under his leadership, exhibitions were organized both within and beyond the Carpathian region, including Prague, showcasing his own art along with other members' works.

In those years, he also held the managerial role in the international association "Interart," participating in the crafting of its creative agenda. Regular attendance at art symposiums marked this period, during which he produced a vast collection of still lifes, garden-inspired artworks, and open-air landscapes.

From the mid-90s, Ivan embarked on a new artistic venture, focusing on the depiction of female nudes. His portrayals imbued the women with a softness, attractiveness, and a malleable quality, using a style that often transcended realism. He adeptly used a limited color palette and minimalistic artistic techniques to produce compelling results. A tendency towards a somewhat cubist landscape with the same restrained color spectrum became noticeable. Additionally, religious architecture began to feature prominently in a series of his paintings.

During the years 1996 to 1998, Ivan assumed the role of president for the Sub-Carpathian Regional Artists' Foundation. However, in 1997, he faced a significant health challenge when he was diagnosed with heart disease, leading to a heart surgery in Hungary where he received an artificial heart valve. Given the need for regular medical supervision by Hungarian cardiologists, Ivan and his wife Irma decided to relocate to Hungary, choosing to reside in the village of Diósjenő. Their son Andrij, along with his family, had already established their lives in Hungary, where Andrij was an active member of the Ruthenian minority (later rising to the position of Chairman). Both father and son collaborated to organize exhibitions for Subcarpathian artists, featuring their own works as well.

 

 

1999 – 2010

 

• Позад перевожованя до Мадярщины у 1998 р Иван и Ірма у 2001 рôці дÿстали горожанство.

У многых образах Ивана сього періода прослїжуєся ґеометричнÿсть та мозаїчнÿсть. Часто темов є взаимины чоловіка и жоны, їх любôв и духовна єднÿсть. У сюй же излозі ним стварена велика серія (коло 20) образув за творами днешньых тай класичных компоністÿв. Выстава сих образув отбылася у Ваці и Будапешті у 2006 рôці.

Цїлково, із 1999 рôку у Ивана зачинать ся майбÿльш плодотворный період творчеськôї активности. Выстава «Три Манайла» убыйшла коло 10 варошÿв Мадярщины, образи родины Манайло (11 членÿв) были презентовані на выставі у Марія-Повчі у 2005 рôці. У сись період художник принимать участь у десятках выстав: 4 выставы у Ваці, из них у 2007 – юбілейна, многі по Мадярщині, 6 персоналных у Будапешті, из них у 2009 – выстава у офісови Світовôї Рады Мадяр, на котрÿй Иван, наперво не етнічный мадяр, быв угонорованый памятнôв срібернôв медальов «За подїл у збогачовані світового кумшта та вызначный причинок у змуцненя русинсько-мадярськôї дружбы».

Иван принимав участіє у многых межинародных творчых пленерах. У 2007 рôці започатковав межинародні русинські діточі творчі таборы на Балатôні, де попри занимань живописом діти спознавали ся из традіціями, културов, фолклором русинÿв. За його почином быв выданый каталог «Художники родины Манайло».

Имня Манайло стає упознаваным у Мадярщині. Про нього писала преса. Мадярська телевізія узяла дакÿлько інтервю и зняла два філмы-жизнеписы про Ивана Манайло.

Вÿн творчо активный, многоякый, роботящый.

Пуслідні рокы житя Иван приклав много сил про всокоченя меморіального музея ÿтця. Здорôвля ся пудломило.

8 фебруара 2010 рôка художника не стало (інсульт). Похоронили го коло няня и мамы на теметÿві Калварія в Унґварі.

У 2012 р. у Ваці утбылася посмертна юбілейна ретроспективна выстава образув Ивана Манайло, котра буде експонована в Унґварі и у Кієві.

У 2019 рокови, у знак вызнаня надзвычайного приноса Ивана у всокоченя и розвуй русинської културы, єго сын Андрій узяв на ся починок. У сотрудництві из русинськым самосправованям в. Вац, Мадярщина, и Світовым Конґресом Русинÿв, они основали Межинародну премію имени Ивана Манайла "Pro Arte Ruthenorum". Есе престіжноє удостоєня типирь ся вручає кождый рÿк май вызначным дїятелём у околї русинського кумшта.

• Following their relocation to Hungary in 1998, Ivan and Irma were granted citizenship in 2001. Throughout the ensuing period, Ivan's artworks often showcased a distinct geometric and mosaic style, with recurrent themes centered on the spiritual bond and romantic love between man and woman. Employing this stylistic approach, he crafted a comprehensive series - approximately 20 pieces - influenced by the works of both modern and classical composers. This series was exhibited in Budapest and Vác, Hungary in 2006.

The year 1999 marked the advent of Ivan's most vibrant period of artistic endeavor. A remarkable exhibition named "Three Manajloes" traveled across approximately 10 cities in Hungary, introducing the 11 members of the Manajlo family to the public at the Máriapócs exhibition in 2005. Throughout this dynamic phase, Ivan graced numerous exhibitions countrywide, featuring in four personal showcases in Vác, including a milestone exhibit in 2007, as well as six personal exhibitions in Budapest. Among these was a 2009 presentation hosted by the Hungarian World Association. At this event, Ivan, being the first non-ethnic Hungarian honoree, was bestowed with a commemorative silver medal recognizing his invaluable contributions towards enriching the art world and fortifying the Rusyn-Hungarian camaraderie.

Ivan was an active participant in various international art camps, going so far as to initiate the Rusyn international children's art camp at Lake Balaton in 2007. Beyond painting classes, this camp familiarized children with the traditions, culture, and folklore of the Ruthenians. Under his auspices, a catalogue titled "Artists of the Manajlo family" was also published.

The Manajlo name grew in prominence within Hungary, featuring regularly in newspaper articles and reports. Hungarian television networks conducted several interviews with Ivan, even airing two biographical films about him.

In the twilight years of his life, Ivan exerted significant efforts towards preserving his father's memorial museum. Despite declining health, he remained fervently engaged in his artistic pursuits.

On the 8th of February, 2010, Ivan passed away, his final resting place located beside his parents in the Calvary Cemetery in Uzhgorod.

A commemorative jubilee exhibition was held in his honor in Vác in 2012, with plans for presentations in Uzhgorod and Kiev.

In 2019, in tribute to Ivan's extraordinary contribution to the preservation and enhancement of Rusyn culture, his son Andrij took the initiative. In collaboration with the Rusyn self-government of Vác, Hungary, and the World Congress of Rusyns, they established the Ivan Manaylo International Prize "Pro Arte Ruthenorum". This prestigious accolade is now annually awarded to the most distinguished contributors to Rusyn art.
